The Houston summer is iconic for its humidity and record-breaking temperatures, but for our pets, the "dog days of summer" can be life-threatening. At Braescroft Animal Clinic, we see an increase in heat-related emergencies every year. Understanding how to prevent heatstroke is the most important part of being a pet parent in the Bayou City.

1. The "7-Second Rule" for Pavement Safety In the Meyerland and Bellaire areas, asphalt temperatures can reach 140°F when the air is only 90°F. Before walking your dog, place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it will burn their paw pads. Stick to early morning or late evening walks.

2. Recognizing Heatstroke Symptoms Unlike humans, dogs can't sweat to cool down—they pant. If panting becomes excessive, or you notice the following, your pet needs immediate help:

  • Dark red or purple gums

  • Glazed eyes and disorientation

  • Vomiting or collapse If your pet shows these signs, call our emergency vet team or a 24/7 hospital immediately.

3. Hydration and "Pup-sicles" Always provide access to shade and fresh water. A great Houston-specific tip: Freeze low-sodium chicken broth in ice cube trays for a hydrating treat that keeps their core temperature down.

Ready for a check-up? Schedule a summer wellness exam to ensure your pet's heart and lungs are healthy enough for the heat.
